WATERLOO - Keller Jacobs had two hits and four RBIs, while Cohen Green allowed only one hit in 3.2 innings as Marquette Catholic won its first baseball game of the season, defeating Waterloo Gibault Catholic 14-8 in a game played Friday night in Waterloo.
It was a see-saw game most of the way, with the Explorers jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second, but the Hawks countered with four runs in the home half of the third to take a 4-3 lead. Marquette then scored three runs in the fourth, four more in the fifth, and two runs each in the sixth and seventh, while Gibault scored single runs in the fourth through seventh innings to make the final score 14-8.
Aidan Hayes started the scoring for the Explorers in the second with an RBI double that plated Carson Bauer to make it 1-0, then Jacobs singled home both Hayes and Robert Roentz, but Jacobs was thrown out at third to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, a ground out to first by Nolan Snell scored Danny Kinsey to cut the lead to 3-1, then Kole Schilling singled home Robert Pierpoint to make the score 3-2. After a walk to Dylan Schaefer, Gus Schmidt singled home Schaefer and Schilling to give Gibault the lead at 4-3, but Schmidt was thrown out at second to end the inning.
In the top of the fourth, with the bases loaded and two out, Jacobs singled home Roentz and Bauer, Jacobs going to second, then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-4. Gibault cut the lead to 6-5 in the home half when Kinsey reached on error, allowing Carson Timmons to score. The top of the fifth saw Hayes singling home two runs, then Rea singled home two more runs to increase the lead to 10-5. The Hawks got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth when Timmons reached on an error, scoring Schmidt to cut the lead to 10-6.
In the top of the sixth, Eli Rodgers scored on a passed ball, and Roentz doubled home another run to give Marquette a 12-6 lead. A Schaefer grounder to short score Pierpoint to make it 12-7 in the bottom of the sixth, but the Explorers got their final two runs in the seventh, when Jacobs scored on an error by the shortstop on a grounder hit by Logan Sherman, and Joe Stephan scored on a ground out to the first baseman to make it 14-7. The Hawks scored their final run in the home half on an RBI double by Kinsey that scored Dante Gianino with the game's final run, making the final 14-8.
Roentz led Marquette with three hits and an RBI, while Jacobs had his two-hit, four RBI game, Hayes came up with two hits and three RBIs, Rea had two hits and drove home two runs, Rodgers had two hits, Bauer came up with a hit and RBI, Kooper Morissey had a hit, and Sherman drove home a run. Green pitched 3.2 innings, and gave up three runs, two earned, on a hit, walked four and struck out none, while Tony Eberin pitched the final 3.1 innings for the win, allowing six runs, four earned, on eight hits, walking two and fanning none.
Kinsey led Gibault with two hits and an RBI, while Tim Donius had two hits, Schmidt had a hit and two RBIs, Schilling came up with a hit and RBI, Pierpoint, Troy Neff, and Timmons all had hits, and both Snell and Schaefer drove in runs. Gianino started on the mound, and was charged with the loss, going 3.1 innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits, walking none and fanning seven. Steven Schaefer pitched one inning. and gave up two unearned runs without a hit, walking two and striking out one, Noah Koeninger went for 0.2 innings, conceding two earned runs on one hit, walking two and fanning one, and Garrett Patton threw the final two innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits, walking two and striking out three.
The Explorers are now 1-1, and next play at Hillsboro Saturday morning at 11 a.m., then are at Piasa Southwestern Monday, and are at Father McGivney Catholic to start off their Gateway Metro Conference season Tuesday, both games starting at 4:30 p.m.
The Hawks go to 0-2, and are at Roxana Saturday morning at 10 a.m., then play Jersey at Roxana City Park as a part of a cluster at 12 noon on Saturday, then host New Athens Monday at 4:30 p.m.
