Late Run Lifts Civic Memorial Past Roxana in 5-4 Thriller

In a closely contested game, Roxana gave up a late lead resulting in a 5-4 loss to Civic Memorial at Roxana Park Wednesday.

ROXANA - Wednesday’s matchup at Roxana Park proved to be a heartbreaker for Roxana Shells , as they surrendered a late lead in a 5-4 loss to Civic Memorial Lady Eagles.

The game was deadlocked at four in the top of the seventh inning when Dakota Robinson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in the go-ahead run for Civic Memorial.

Civic Memorial struck first in the opening inning after Maria Phillips grounded out to drive in a run. Roxana answered quickly in the bottom half, as Madison John laced a double down the left field line to even the score at one.

After a quiet stretch, Civic Memorial regained the lead in the fifth inning when Emma Wade delivered an RBI single to make it 2-1.

Roxana responded in a big way in the bottom of the inning, taking a 4-2 lead behind a two-run triple from Josie Brannon and an RBI groundout by Lilli Ray.

The Lady Eagles battled back in the sixth, tying the game capitalizing on an error and an RBI single from Olivia Monroe, setting the stage for the dramatic seventh inning.

Monroe earned the win in the circle for Civic Memorial, allowing six hits and four runs over seven innings while striking out three and walking two.

Roxana’s Kassidy Schuyler went the distance, giving up five runs (two earned) on 12 hits without issuing a walk or recording a strikeout.

Brannon led Roxana offensively, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while John also collected two hits. The Shells turned one double play defensively.

Civic Memorial totaled 12 hits in the contest, with Phillips, Wade, Zoey Hunt, and Allison Friedel each recording two hits. Monroe, Phillips, and Wade each drove in a run in the win.
