Civic Memorial Eagles Secure 13-9 Victory Over Mt. Vernon

Butler earns win on mound and drives in crucial runs to lead Eagles’ offense in tight battle.

BETHALTO - Civic Memorial Varsity Eagles rode a monster performance from Chase Butler to a 13-9 victory over Mt. Vernon on Wednesday, as Butler drove in five runs on four hits to power the offense.

Butler did damage all game long, singling in the second, fifth, and sixth innings while adding a double in the third. His two-run single in the sixth helped create late separation in a back-and-forth contest.

Mt. Vernon struck first in the opening inning when Cale Maurer doubled to bring home a run, but Civic Memorial quickly answered. Brock Rust delivered an RBI single in the bottom half of the first to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge.

Civic Memorial extended the lead to 3-1 in the second on Butler’s RBI single before breaking things open in the third. The Eagles plated five runs in the inning, highlighted by a Rust RBI triple, a Brady Hasenjaeger RBI triple, a Butler RBI double, along with a passed ball and an error that each brought in a run.

Mt. Vernon refused to go away, rallying in the sixth with five runs on five hits. Ryker Perigo singled in a run, Trevor McClure doubled home two, and additional runs scored on an error and a Bronx Hefner single to tighten the score.

Butler also earned the win on the mound for Civic Memorial, working 4.2 innings while allowing four runs on five hits, striking out six and walking three. Jacob Flowers was strong in relief, tossing 1.1 hitless innings and striking out one.

Owen Burke started for Mt. Vernon and took the bulk of the damage, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings. Ethan Fitzjerrells was tagged with the loss.

Civic Memorial finished with 14 hits in the win, with Rust, Ryan Lamarr, and Hasenjaeger each recording multiple hits alongside Butler’s four-hit performance. Mt. Vernon totaled 11 hits in the loss.
