Our Daily Show Interview! Getting to Know: Lance Griggs- Twin Co Remodeling Specialists!

ALTON/GODFREY - A locally-owned contracting company goes above and beyond for customers.

Twin-Co, Inc. was established in 1981. They offer bathroom and kitchen remodeling, windows, doors, decks and other home services. Lance Griggs took over the company about three years ago, and he makes a point to adhere to “old-school” business tactics like being available for customers and sticking to what he knows.

“All you’ve got to do is be consistent. I think the deal is, we’re just trying to be service-oriented. That's what we’re trying to do,” Griggs said. “It really turns out that just sticking to the basics, just calling customers back, answering the phone, communicating very well — it’s unbelievable how much that makes a difference.”

Griggs began his career in custom woodwork and cabinetry. When the market crashed in 2008, he transitioned to remodeling and has “never looked back.”

As a business, Twin-Co, Inc. works closely with other companies to provide the best product and experience for customers. They offer referrals and collaborate with vendors and subcontractors to make sure their customers get what they need.

Griggs believes this is a strength. Not only does it make it possible for them to help their customers and build close relationships with other businesses, but it also lets Twin-Co, Inc. specialize.

“Being a small business and not pretending to be a large business and staying in our lane, we use the team around us,” he said. “You’re going to make better networks with other companies in the area if you stay in your lane and you’re not encroaching on their trade…If you’re not learning from your mistakes, you’re probably not learning much. If you overstep, you dial back, you figure out what your lane is, and you try to stay there.”

The relationship with customers is equally important to Twin-Co, Inc. In addition to their main remodeling services, they offer a Hand-E Men service to provide basic repairs and home maintenance. Griggs has found that this helps a lot of people.

It’s also important to him to look out for his customers throughout the remodeling process. He’s happy to work with the other companies and subcontractors so his clients can get the best product at the best price.

“Once the customer latches onto you and trusts you, they need that. They don’t want to deal with a bunch of different people. They want somebody to sort of, in a way, protect them,” he explained. “It’s nice to be able to help customers. We literally get little old ladies that just are so happy, it sounds like they’re going to burst into tears, that they know they have someone they can call who will help them out and it not be a big drawn-out thing with a huge price tag.”

Twin-Co, Inc. also prides itself on its local focus. They mainly stay in Alton and Godfrey, sometimes expanding to Edwardsville or Jerseyville. But most of their business comes from the Riverbend. This is great for them, but Griggs pointed out that it’s also a plus for customers. They can provide lower prices and more customer-focused services.

“Part of the reason to shop here for us contractors locally is, if you do go to St. Louis or beyond Edwardsville, Fairview Heights, Shiloh, you’re going to pay a different price tier. They're climbing up. The more populated areas, they get more money for what they're doing,” he said. “It’s keeping it local. I think that the more you build your referral team and your networking, the more that you can help customers avoid that sticky situation with the wrong contractor.”
