Trustees unanimously approved a resolution on March 24, 2026 to apply for $149,903.62 in grant funding under the annual Park Enhancement Program (PEP) from Madison County.

The village plans to use these funds for improvement projects at four key recreational sites, including Miner Park, Schon Park, Green Space North, and Village Hall Park, as well as a fleet of modernized park maintenance equipment, according to the resolution.

Public Works Director Scott Slemer noted Glen Carbon is eligible for an increased amount of PEP funds in 2026 compared to previous years, allowing the village to plan for several park projects.

If approved, grant funds would cover the installation of durable aluminum bleachers and new backstops at the Miner Park and Village Hall ball diamonds, along with a complete replacement of the Miner Park swing set. Also listed in the resolution are three ADA-compliant picnic tables at Schon Park and 32 high-capacity trash receptacles at parks across the village, as well as professional power-washing and re-staining of the pavilions at Schon Park and Green Space North.

Safety upgrades are also included in the village’s PEP grant application, including the installation of two automated external defibrillator (AED) machines and related medical equipment in parks across the village. 30 safety bollard covers would also be installed at certain trail access points for increased visibility and to prevent entry from unauthorized vehicles.

The village aims to maintain its parks with an updated fleet of equipment, including a “Gator” utility vehicle and a small tractor “specifically outfitted for snow removal on park paths and parking lots,” according to the resolution. The grant would also fund the purchase of a zero-turn lawn mower and two snow blowers for seasonal maintenance needs at all village-wide park facilities.
