
ALTON – After securing a 6-1 win over Marquette Catholic at home on Tuesday, the Father McGivney Catholic High School baseball team loaded the buses and took to Gordon Moore Park for the away game with the Explorers on Thursday, March 26.
McGivney jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first two and a half innings before Marquette’s one-run response in the bottom of the third. The Griffins tacked on another run in the fifth before plating 16 runs in the sixth for a lopsided 23-1 win.
McGivney out hit Marquette 17-4. 12 of those hits were in the sixth.
Isaac Wendler got the win on the mound for McGivney with seven strikeouts and a walk through five innings of work. Will Heinz closed out the sixth with a one-two-three inning.
Meanwhile, Marquette’s four pitchers combined for nine walks and only two Ks.
Paddy Martin led the Griffins’ offense going 3-for-5 on the day with four RBI. Jack Rolves went 3-for-4 with a homerun and three RBI. Omar Avalos and Scott Phelps each had three hits and two RBI. Ty Etcheson also recorded two hits.
Marquette’s lone run came from an RBI single from Jack Rea.
McGivney improved to 4-2 on the season while Marquette fell to 1-4.
