EDWARDSVILLE - Nick Chiarodo threw five strong innings in relief of starter Miles Dunnill, Joe Kirgan banged out three hits, and Tyson Wampler hit his first-ever varsity home run, but a four-run top of the first inning was enough to send Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Catholic to a 6-5 win over Edwardsville in a baseball game played Monday afternoon at Tom Pile Field.
The loss broke a two-game winning streak for the Tigers, and was their fourth in their first seven games, sending Edwardsville to a 3-4 record.

The Cyclones got off to a great start in the first, starting with a walk to lead-off batter Austin Rutter, which was followed up by a two-run homer by Ty Springer over the center field fence to give SH-G an early 2-0 lead. Another walk to Carson Butler led to a homer over the left field fence by Mikey Groesch to give the Cyclones a quick 4-0 lead.
The Tigers fought back and picked up a run back in the home half of the inning, on a lead-off walk to Ty Hunt, a single by Hunter Baugh that sent Hunt to second, and an RBI single by Chiarodo that scored Hunt and cut the lead to 4-1. The Cyclones scored on a run back in the top of the third, courtesy of a Springer single, and an RBI double by Butler that upped the lead to 5-1.
In the bottom of the third, Baugh led off with a walk, went to third on a double down the left field line by Chiarodo, with both scoring ahead of Wampler, who hit a three-run homer over the left field fence to cut the lead to 5-4. Kirgan later singled with one out, but could not score, leaving the score at 5-4.
The Cyclones upped the ante in the fifth, when Rutter led off with a double over the right fielder's head, and with two out, scored when Groesch reached on an error by the first baseman, making it 6-4. In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers gave themselves a chance, starting with a Wampler double to left, scoring on a RBI single by Kirgan, but the Cyclones got the final two outs to take the win 6-5.
Kirgan led the Tigers with his three hits and RBI, while Wampler had two hits, including his homer, and three RBIs, Chiarodo had two hits and a RBI, Baugh had two hits on the day, and Sean Murphy, Joel Fields, and Zane Maxwell also had hits. Dunnill started on the mound and was charged with the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits, walking three and striking out one. Chiarodo came in in the third, and pitched five innings, giving up an unearned run on two hits, fanning five.
SH-G is now 8-1 on the season, while Edwardsville goes to 3-4, and the Tigers next play at home on Tuesday against Mascoutah in a 4:30 p.m. start, then play in a cluster at Jackson on Saturday, meeting Eureka, Mo. at 11 a.m., then facing the host Indians at 12:30 p.m.
Edwardsville then starts the Southwestern Conference season with a two-game set against Alton, hosting the Redbirds Apr. 7, with the return game Apr. 9 at Redbirds Field, both games starting at 4:30 p.m.
