Alton Police Chief Jarrett Ford described Atkinson as “a dependable and respected member of the department.”
In one high-risk call, the department said Atkinson responded to a domestic disturbance where shots were reported, Chief Ford said.
"He arrived quickly, saw the suspect running toward the rear of a residence and into a wooded area, and obtained a detailed description before ensuring the victim’s safety and assisting with an investigation that led to charges," Chief Ford said.
In another incident, Chief Ford said Atkinson helped locate and apprehend an armed suspect during a home invasion.
Ford also said Atkinson responded to approximately 702 calls for service, conducted traffic enforcement, and “consistently demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and bravery.”
