TROY, Ill. — Federal investigators joined local authorities Monday, April 6, 2026, in probing a late-night explosion and house fire that killed three people and left another hospitalized with significant burn injuries in Troy, Illinois.
Madison County Sheriff’s deputies and the Troy Fire Department were called at 11:14 p.m. Sunday, April 5, 2026, to a structure fire with people reported trapped inside a residence in the 8000 block of W. Kirsch Road, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said they also received information that an explosion occurred.
As first responders arrived, they located one person with significant burn injuries who was later transported to a St. Louis-area hospital for medical treatment, the sheriff’s office said. A few residents were able to escape the house without injuries.
Firefighters later found three people inside the structure who were dead, the sheriff’s office said.
On Monday morning, April 6, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the investigation, and the FBI was also at the scene. Late Monday morning, the FBI brought in additional equipment, and the FBI and ATF pushed back fire departments and other authorities while repeatedly yelling, “fire in the hole, fire in the hole,” in what appeared to be a controlled detonation of explosives.
A command post was established at the scene, and the St. Louis Regional Bomb Squad also responded.
Madison County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating along with the Madison County Coroner’s Office, the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office and the ATF, according to the sheriff’s office.
The investigation remains active. The names of the victims have not yet been released.
