“I am incredibly proud of our team and the work we do each day,” said Director of Environmental Education Jessica Mohlman. “Our team may be small, but we are deeply committed to creating meaningful, accessible learning experiences that connect people to the natural world. This recognition reflects the passion, creativity, and dedication our team brings to advancing environmental education across Illinois.”

This year marks the inaugural presentation of the Organization of the Year award. NGRREC’s Environmental Education team was selected through a competitive, peer-review process and nominations led by environmental education professionals from across Illinois.

NGRREC educators have made a significant statewide impact through innovative programming that connects learners of all ages to the rivers, wetlands, and watersheds that shape Illinois and beyond. Their work spans K–12 education, educator professional development, public programming, and community science initiatives.

“Environmental education plays a critical role in bridging the gap between research and the public,” Mohlman said. “Our goal is to help people understand what we are studying, why we are doing it, and why it matters to their everyday lives. At the same time, we aim to spark curiosity and inspire lifelong connections to the natural world.”

As part of a leading freshwater research institution, NGRREC’s education programs translate complex scientific research into accessible, engaging learning experiences. This approach ensures that communities are not only informed about regional environmental challenges but are also empowered to participate in solutions.
