Oilers Defeat East St Louis in High Scoring Game

WOOD RIVER — East Alton-Wood River’s Oilers outlasted East St. Louis 11-9 on Wednesday in Wood River in a game that featured frequent lead changes, 15 total hits and multiple runs driven in.

East St. Louis struck first in the top of the first inning. Liberty Fry induced Asia Jackson to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored, and Oleah Brown grounded out to bring home two more runs for a 3-0 lead.

East Alton-Wood River answered immediately, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first on zero hits to take a 5-3 lead. The biggest play of the inning was a walk by Morgan Reynolds that drove in two runs.

The Oilers added on in the second inning after East St. Louis committed an error, and East Alton-Wood River scored on a wild pitch, with each play producing a run.

East St. Louis pulled even in the top of the fifth, tying the game on a single by Jackson and a groundout by Khayla Walker. The Oilers regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when an error scored one run, then another error followed to extend the advantage to 9-7.

East St. Louis tied it again in the sixth on a triple by Iyanna Hogan and a single by Jackson. East Alton-Wood River went back in front in the bottom of the sixth after East St. Louis committed an error and Rylee Fogarty grounded out, with each play scoring a run.

Fry earned the win for East Alton-Wood River, allowing nine hits and nine runs, three earned, over six and two-thirds innings. She struck out 10 and walked three. Reynolds led the Oilers with one RBI. Fry and Madelyn Stone each had two hits, and Fry stole two bases as East Alton-Wood River finished with seven stolen bases and five walks.

Jackson led East St. Louis with three RBIs and went 2-for-4. Jayona Scott, Jackson and Hogan each had two hits for East St. Louis.

East Alton-Wood River is scheduled to play at Roxana on Thursday.
