MADISON/ST. CLAIR COUNTIES - Illinois State Police will conduct Alcohol Countermeasure Enforcement patrols in Madison and St. Clair counties during April, a stepped-up effort aimed at preventing and detecting impaired driving and other vehicle code violations, Troop 8 Commander Capt. Casey Faro said in a statement from Collinsville.

The patrols, known as ACE, allow state police to “focus on preventing, detecting, and taking enforcement action in response to violations associated with impaired driving and illegal transportation or consumption of alcohol or drugs,” according to the release. Faro said the agency has “zero tolerance for impaired driving in Illinois.”

Officers assigned to the patrols will watch for motorists who show signs of impaired driving, operating vehicles unsafely, driving with a suspended or revoked license, and transporting open alcoholic beverages, the release said. Troopers also will look for improper seat belt and child restraint use, distracted driving and other Illinois Vehicle Code violations.

The announcement follows Roadside Safety Checks conducted in Madison and St. Clair counties in March, for which state police reported 88 total citations and arrests and 30 written warnings. The results included one DUI citation, 19 other alcohol or drug citations, 27 occupant restraint offenses, 32 registration offenses, 28 driver’s license offenses and seven insurance violations.

State police cited estimates that alcohol and drug impairment are a factor in more than 47% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes in Illinois, and that there is one alcohol-related traffic fatality every 39 minutes in the United States.

The ACE patrols and March roadside safety checks were funded through the Illinois Department of Transportation, according to the releases. The roadside safety checks were conducted under the message, “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”
