Hunter Baugh Sparks Edwardsville With Three Hits And RBI In 11-3 Baseball Win At Alton  

Baugh’s offensive prowess led the Tigers’ charge as they overcame Alton to sweep the Southwestern Conference series over the Redbirds.

ALTON - Hunter Baugh led the way with three hits and an RBI, while Tony Eberlin threw five very good innings on the mound, striking out four, as Edwardsville scored nine unanswered runs after the game was tied 2-2 following the first inning in sweeping their Southwestern Conference baseball series over Alton 11-3 Thursday afternoon at Redbirds Field.

The win was the Tigers' third in their last four games, while the Redbirds lost their fourth straight game as Edwardsville got the sweep in the opening league series of the year.

Edwardsville got on the board first in the opening inning, when, with one out, Baugh singled and scored on Tyson Wampler's triple to center to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Jack Kirgan then lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Wampler and double the lead to 2-0. Logan Hickman started the Alton first with a double, then Jack Puent was hit by a pitch, and an infield single by Alex Pilger loaded the bases. Anderson Kaufmann's infield RBI single scored Hickman, and Donovan Ducey hit into a double play that scored Puent to tie the game 2-2.

The Tigers began to take control in the third, when Zane Maxwell drew a walk, and scored when a sacrifice bunt by Ty Hunt was thrown into right field to give Edwardsville a 3-2 lead, Hunt going to third on the play. Baugh doubled home Hunt to extend the lead to 4-2, and in the fourth, Joel Fields led off with a single, went to second on a ground out, and scored on an RBI single by Rhys Gierich to make it 5-2 for the Tigers.

The Tigers hen scored five runs in the fifth, starting with a lead-off hit by Baugh, who scored on an RBI double by Wampler to up the lead to 6-2, and after a walk to Kirgan and a bunt single by Andrew McCutchen to load the bases. Fields doubled home Kirgan and Wampler, sending McCutchen to third and making it 8-2. McCutchen was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to short by Sutton Leas, and Gierich struck out, but Fields scored on a passed ball, and courtesy runner Mace Karnes stole home on a double steal, with Maxwell, who had walked, stealing second and making the score 10-2.

Edwardsville got its final run in the sixth, when Baugh led off with a walk, stole second, and scored on a double by Kirgan one out later to make the score 11-2. Alton got a run in the bottom of the seventh, starting with Blake Rensing reaching on an error, going to second on a ground out, then, after Hickman drew a two-out walk, Puent's infield RBI single to short brought in Rensing, but a fly out to right ended the game in favor of Edwardsville 11-3.

Baugh led the Tigers with three hits and an RBI, while both Wampler and Fields had two hits and two RBIs each, Kirgan came up with a hit and two RBIs, Gierich had a hit and RBI, and both McCutchen and Sam Noascomo had a hit apiece.

Eberlin went five innings to be credited with the win, allowing two earned runs on three hits, walking one and striking out four. Andrew McKey pitched the sixth inning, allowing only one hit, and Hunt threw in the seventh inning, conceding an unearned run on one hit, walking one and fanning one.

Puent led the Redbirds with two hits and an RBI, while Kaumann had a hit and an RBI, and both Hickman and Pilger had a hit each. Kaufmann went for four innings on the mound, and was charged with the loss, allowing 10 runs, eight earned, on nine hits, walking three and fanning five, while Ducey pitched for two innings, and gave up an earned run on a hit, walking two and striking out three. Hickman threw for one inning, giving up a hit while striking out one.

Edwardsville is now 6-6, and plays its annual game at Busch Stadium Sunday evening at 5 p.m. against Mattoon, following the game between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, then plays a two-game set against O'Fallon, the first game Tuesday at Blazier Field, with the return game at Tom Pile Field Friday, both games starting at 4:30 p.m.

Alton is also 6-6, and next plays at home on Saturday against Freeburg in an 11 a.m. first pitch, then travels to Gillespie on Monday, and hosts East St. Louis on Tuesday, with all games starting at 4:30 p.m.
