Alton's Jack Puent.

EDWARDSVILLE - Jack Puent is a senior infielder/outfielder/pitcher with the Alton High baseball team and helps to provide the senior leadership that the Redbirds depend on to be a successful team this 2026 season.

Puent pitched two innings in a 9-2 loss to Edwardsville on April 7, 2026, at Tom Pile Field, giving up five runs, three earned, on only one hit, and walked four and struck out two. For the season, he's currently 1-1 in five appearances on the mound, with three starts, and carries a 4.42 ERA, having allowed 15 runs, eight earned, on 13 hits, walking eight and fanning 14 in eight innings pitched. At the plate, he's also done well, currently hitting .452, currently 14-for-31, with no home runs, three RBIs and four stolen bases, as the Redbirds are currently 6-7.

In an interview conducted after the loss to the Tigers, Puent said it's the one-percenters - the little things - that are the key to winning ball games, and it's something Edwardsville does very well.

"I think it comes as part of doing the little things over and over again," Puent said. "Edwardsville's a great club, they do the little things over and over again, and that's what wins you ball games a lot of times. We have semi-good hitting and semi-good pitching all game, but at the end of the day, the team that's going to prevail is who does the little things correctly."

The Redbirds did get off to a good start this season, winning five of their first six games, and Puent wants to keep things heading for Alton in the right direction, especially with the start of the Southwestern Conference season.

"We've got off to a great start so far," Puent said. "We play in a great conference, so that's the hard part about it. We play teams like Edwardsville and O'Fallon, and a couple of other schools. It makes it challenging, but that's the best part about it. So, we want to keep it going and get back on a good track."

As far as goals and ambitions for himself and the Redbirds this season, Puent's hopes are more team-oriented than anything else, and mostly involve postseason success.

"Our ambitions: we'd love to get a regional championship back in Alton's name," Puent said, "and we're just going to try as hard as we can for that, and see if we can make a deep playoff run this season. Just have some fun with the guys."

The spirit and morale of the Redbirds are still at a high level, and Puent is very excited about it.

"Oh yeah, it's good," Puent said. "No worries at all, we're high. We hope for good things at all times."
