Kirgan Hits First Inning Inside-The-Park Grand Slam, Wise Fans Four On Mound, Edwardsville Wins At Busch Stadium

ST. LOUIS - Jack Kirgan hit an inside-the-park grand slam homer as part of a five-run first inning, while Calyx Wise struck out four batters in two innings on the mound as Edwardsville defeated Mattoon 8-1 in a baseball game Sunday evening at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

It was the Tigers' annual game at Busch Stadium, and was played after the Boston Red Sox win over the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Tigers scored their first five runs in the opening inning, starting with a walk to Ty Hunt, a hit by Hunter Baugh, and a walk to Tyson Wampler to load the bases. On a 2-2 pitch, Kirgan hit a ball down the right field line for an inside-the-park grand slam homer that scored Hunt, Baugh, and Wampler ahead of him, and gave Edwardsville a 4-0 lead. Sean Murphy then singled to left, with courtesy runner Aiden May stealing second, then scoring on a Mace Karnes single up the middle to increase the lead to 5-0.

In the bottom of the second, Wampler tripled to center field with one out, Kirgan then drew a walk to put runners on the corners, and Murphy grounded out to second to score Wampler, and Kirgan went to second, making the score 6-0. The Green Wave scored their only run in the top of the fourth, starting with a lead-off single, then was forced on a fielder's choice to Brendan Prince. Prince went to third on a base hit by Shayden Neff, then Neff stole second, and Prince scored when Anthony Sprackler reached on a ground ball fielder's choice, Neff being thrown out at third, cutting the Edwardsville lead to 6-1.

The Tigers increased their lead in the home half of the fifth, starting with a lead-off single by Zane Maxwell, who went to third on a passed ball, Karnes drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Grant Peterson hit into a double play that scored Maxwell to make the score 7-1, then in the sixth, Miles Dunnill singled and scored on an error by the right fielder to make the final 8-1 for Edwardsville.

Maxwell led the Tigers with two hits, while Kirgan's first-inning grand slam was hit only hit and four RBIs on the day, both Murphy and Karnes had a hit and RBI each, and Wampler, Dunnill, and Peterson all had hits. Jax Andreas was credited with the win, going one inning, allowing no runs or hits, walking two and striking out one, Wise went for two innings, allowing an earned run on two hits, fanning four, Carter Grote threw for one inning, fanning three, Brady Hasquin went for one inning, striking out one, and Andrew McKey pitched in the seventh, striking out the side.

The Green Wave is now 2-6, while the Tigers are now 7-6, and meet O'Fallon in a two-game Southwestern Conference series, the first game at Blazier Field on Tuesday, and the second game at Tom Pile Field on Thursday, with both games starting at 4:30 p.m. Edwardsville then plays two games at McCracken County in Paducah, Ky., meeting Owensboro, Ky.
