Edwardsville softball pitcher Marley Fox.EDWARDSVILLE — Marley Fox is emerging as the ace of the Edwardsville High School softball pitching staff as the senior continues her recovery from an early-season injury and delivers strong performances in the circle.

Fox was sharp in early April during a doubleheader sweep of Quincy, when the Tigers won 15-0 and 17-2. In the first game, after allowing a leadoff single, she retired the next 12 batters in a row as Edwardsville earned a four-inning victory over the Blue Devils. She struck out six in that win and recently carried a 2.63 ERA on the mound.

In a postgame interview between games of the doubleheader, Fox said she felt supported by the defense behind her.

“Oh, yeah, it feels great out here,” Fox said. “Everyone was there to back me up, and it just feels great.”

Fox said returning from injury has been a key factor in her early success, crediting trainers and her approach to getting back on the field.

“I definitely had a little injury at the beginning of the season,” Fox said, “but working with training, getting back to it, and working back correctly, so I don’t make it worse, has been great. Now, I’m feeling good and ready to be back out there.”

Fox, a Spencer Homes Female Athlete of the Month for the Tigers, also pointed to the role of coaches and teammates in her progress.

“It’s been great,” Fox said. “My coaches have been really working with the trainers and me, and then, my team there to back me up has been really big.”

She said her curveball has been a consistent weapon, while her rise ball has been less steady but effective when it is on.

“I think my curveball has been working really well,” Fox said. “My rise ball’s been on and off, but when it’s working, it really helps out a lot, too.”

“Knowing my team is backing me up, so I can put the ball where it needs to be, and if it gets put into play, I know that they’re there to make the plays.”

Looking ahead, Fox said her goals for herself and the team are simple.

“I just want us to keep growing,” Fox said, “then hopefully have a great run in the postseason. Everything’s clicking together, our hitting’s good. It feels great.”
