Firefighters were dispatched at 4:16 p.m. to Skyline Towers at 3113 Washington Ave. in Alton. Upon arrival, crews were notified of smoke on the third floor, and as they reached that level, they encountered smoke in the hallway, officials said.

As firefighters moved toward the apartment where the smoke was coming from, they were met with heavy smoke and a sprinkler that had activated. Firefighters used two water cans to put the fire out, according to the department.

Crews checked multiple floors to ensure the fire did not spread. Three apartments were damaged and cannot be lived in until repairs are made.

“The sprinkler helped stop the fire, and we train at this apartment complex for these types of incidents, so our firefighters were prepared,” Alton Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Perry said.

A commercial box-alarm was requested. East Alton, which was already in Alton on a trash fire, was able to put that fire out and then responded to Skyline Towers. Godfrey also responded. Black Jack was en route but was later canceled.

Survival Flight Amblance was on scene in case of injuries, but no injuries were reported. No cause of the fire was released.

Perry praised all the firefighters who helped extinguish the fire.
