From 12–4 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Alton Main Street will host their annual Pop-Up Clothing Swap in the ballroom at Mineral Springs Mall. You can bring old clothing to trade and pay $5, or come empty-handed and pay $10, and take as much as you want. AMS Executive Director Sara McGibany looks forward to welcoming the community for another great swap.
“This is something that is truly homegrown,” she said. “It’s spring cleaning time, so just go through all of your closets and anything wearable. Try it on. If it’s not one of your favorites anymore, ditch it. You can just bring it on down and get as much as you can carry out.”
McGibany explained that the clothing swap started as a tradition among friends, who decided to make it a public event and were surprised when it “just exploded like nothing we’ve ever seen before.” People come from across the region to trade their clothes and refresh their wardrobes.
The goal is to give a second life to these garments while avoiding dumping them in landfills. Any leftover clothing after the swap is over will be donated to local charities.
You can also bring old textiles or fabrics that are stained, torn, or otherwise unusable. The Alton Main Street volunteers will collect these materials and donate them to Remains Inc. to be recycled.
McGibany noted that they are still looking for volunteers. They need a few people to help during the swap, but mostly people who would be free on Monday, April 27, to organize and distribute the leftover clothes. For more information about how to volunteer for this or another Alton Main Street event, visit the official webpage.
The organization has several upcoming events for community members to enjoy, including the Pup Crawl on May 30, 2026, and the Alton Farmers’ and Artisans’ Market, which runs from May 9 through October 17, 2026. They need volunteers for all of these events and invite interested people to stop by the Volunteer Mixer on April 28, 2026, at The Old Bakery Beer Company.
“I’m the only staff person, and we obviously do a ton of stuff, which means there’s a volunteer army out there that’s helping me execute and plan everything that we have going on,” McGibany said. “If anything we do particularly strikes your interest, come down to the Volunteer Mixer on Tuesday at Old Bakery on April 28, and we can get you plugged in.”
She encourages people to engage with all of Alton Main Street’s events, but she is especially looking forward to the Pop-Up Clothing Swap. “Any time somebody says they’re bored in Alton, I just say you’re not paying attention,” McGibany laughed. “I am triple-booked for stuff every weekend.”
