


ALTON - Southwestern Piasa Birds broke open a close game with an eight-run seventh inning Monday to defeat Alton Redbirds 13-3.
Southwestern struck first in the top of the opening inning when Josie Hagen lifted a sacrifice fly and Maci Timpe followed with an RBI single down the right field line, giving the Piasa Birds a 2-0 lead.
Alton answered in the bottom of the second and briefly took a 3-2 advantage after capitalizing on an error.
The Piasa Birds tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning after another Redbirds error, then grabbed control for good in the fifth. A passed ball brought home two runs and pushed Southwestern ahead 5-3.
From there, Southwestern put the game away in dominant fashion. The Piasa Birds sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh and scored eight runs on six hits. Hagen started the rally with an RBI double, Kaylin Broyles followed with a two-run double, Gabby Poole added an RBI groundout, Maddie Pruitt and Mia Wolff each delivered RBI singles, Vivian Zurheide doubled home another run, and an additional run scored on an error.
Hannah Mary earned the win in relief, allowing just three hits over five and one-third shutout innings while striking out seven and walking none. Sydney Timpe started in the circle for Southwestern, allowing three unearned runs over one and two-thirds innings.
Kynlie Muscarella took the loss for Alton after allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits over five and two-thirds innings. She struck out five and walked two.
Southwestern finished with 13 hits. Mary and Hagen each collected three hits, while Zurheide and Pruitt added multiple-hit performances. Broyles drove in two runs from the seventh spot in the lineup.
Lilly Henkhaus led Alton offensively with two hits in four at-bats from the leadoff spot. The Redbirds also turned one double play.
