Belleville West head coach Baltz said the Maroons have been inconsistent but remain in the conference race with plenty of season left.
“We’ve been kind of hot and cold,” Baltz said, “day-to-day, a little bit up and down. But we’ve put in a lot of emphasis on first games, and our conference tends to beat each other up, and it seems to be happening again this year, as usual,” he said. “It’ll be interesting to see what it looks like at the end, but I’m sure that they’ll go back and regroup for Thursday, they’ll be ready to come back and play, and we’ll give it our best shot.”
Baltz said maintaining an even keel has been a focus, particularly in moments when the offense has not cashed in.
“As I said, we haven’t been hitting the ball crazy good," Baltz said. "We’ve had moments when we’ve hit the ball fairly well, but we’ve left guys on third a lot, we’ve left the bases loaded a lot, we haven’t got a lot out of it. We’re trying to get them to where they don’t get too down in those situations, have some confidence, and be ready for the next opportunity, and not get too down on themselves when things don’t go right.”
On Tuesday, Baltz pointed to Chase Boente's pitching as another key.
“Chase, I think, you can’t go without mentioning him,” Baltz said. “Chase Boente pitched a very good game again today. He gave up some hits, but he kind of scattered them, got outs when he had guys on, and bore down there. I think we had second and third with nobody out or one out, we got a lucky bounce off a backstop, but Chase pitched a very, very good game. Our pitching’s been good, we’ve just got to keep it going. We’re only halfway through the season, so there’s a lot of time left. We can’t get too high, we can’t get too low.”
Belleville West is scheduled to play Highland at Glik Park on Friday, then host East St. Louis next Tuesday and Granite City next Wednesday. All games are scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
