Antonini Has Three Hits, Straub Drives In Four Runs: Edwardsville Softball Secures 12th Consecutive Win Against Belleville West

Edwardsville's softball team maintains impressive form with ten shutouts since last defeat on March 27.

BELLEVILLE - Sophie Antonini came up with three hits, Maksine Strabu drove
in four runs, and Marley Fox struck out seven in the circle as Edwardsville's
softball team won its 12th game in a row with a 9-4 Southwestern Conference
win over Belleville West Tuesday at Belleville.

The Tigers last lost on Mar. 27, when they were swept in a doubleheader by
Chatham Glenwood at home. Since then, Edwardsville has won 12 games in a
row, outscoring the opposition 131-14 and has 10 shutouts during the string.

Both Fox and Maroons pitcher Kara Kramer pitched magnificently throughout,
shutting each other out for the first four innings. The Tigers broke service in the
fifth, starting with a lead-off single by Antonini, who stole second and third, and
after a walk to Maggie Bray, a Straub ground out to first brought in Antonini to
give Edwardsville a 1-0 lead. West tied it in the home half, starting with a
lead-off single by Kaleigh Dashner, who stole second, went to third on a ground
out, and scored on an error by the catcher to tie the game 1-1.

Amelia Wilfong led off the sixth by reaching on an error, then Bryar Ellinger
executed a bunt single to get on, and went to second, while Wilfong took third
on an error by the second baseman. Brooke Burris doubled home both runners
to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead, and scored on another error, this by the first
baseman, as Lily Stone had a bunt single, giving Edwardsville a 4-1 lead.

Stone went to second on a bunt single by Antonini, and Savanna Lewis bunted her
way on, with Stone beating the throw to the plate to make it 5-1, Antonini going
to second. Straub doubled home, Antonini to up the Edwardsville lead to 6-1,
Lewis going to third, and after a fly out and a walk to Wilfong, Ellinger singled
home Lewis to make it 7-1 for the Tigers, Straub going to third, and Wilfong to
second, but a groundout ended the inning.

The Tigers added on their final two runs in the seventh, starting with a one-out
double by Antonini, who went to third on a Lewis single, and one out later,
Straub doubled home both Antonini and Lewis to make it 9-1.

The Maroons put up a rally in the bottom of the seventh, starting with lead-off walks to McKenna and Aubrey Schaltenbrand. Addison Colberr reached on an error to score
McKenna and put Schaltenbrand on third, with Colbert going to second.

Elaina Jenkins reached on a fielder's choice that scored Schaltenbrand, and Ella
Weaver grounded to short, bringing in Colbert to cut the lead to 9-4, but Fox
fanned Kramer, and after a walk and a hit batsman to load the bases, got the final
out to give the Tigers the 9-4 win.

Antonini led Edwardsville with her three hits, while Straub had her two hits and
four RBIs, both Ellinger and Lewis had two hits and an RBI each, Burris had a
hit and two RBIs, and Stone had a hit.

Fox went six innings in the circle, and was credited with the win, allowing an unearned run on three hits, walking three and striking out seven, while Makaela Pippins threw in the seventh, allowing three runs, one earned, on no hits, walking three and fanning one.

Chari Coppernall, Dasher, and Schaltenbrand all had hits for the Maroons, while
both Jenkins and Weaver both had an RBI each. Kramer went all the way in the
circle, allowing nine runs, seven earned, on 11 hits, walking four, and striking out
13.

Edwardsville improves to 19-7, and plays in a tournament this weekend at
Bradley-Bourbonnais in suburban Chicago, playing Rock Island on Friday night
at 6:30 p.m. After finishing the tournament on Saturday, the Tigers continue their
road swing by playing at Alton next Tuesday, Columbia on Wednesday, and
Collinsville, Apr. 30, all games starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Maroons slip to 8-9, and host Nashville on Wednesday, and are at Mascoutah
on Thursday, and play at Red Bud on Monday, with all games starting at 4:30 p.m.
