GODFREY - Vitality Women’s Clinic wants the community to know they’re here for individuals experiencing unplanned pregnancy.

Executive Director Jackie Duty and Nurse Manager Amy Runyan recently stopped by “Our Daily Show!” with CJ Nasello to talk about their work at Vitality. As a faith-based, pro-life clinic, Vitality provides free STI and pregnancy testing as well as ultrasounds. They talk to people about their options but do not refer for or perform abortions.

“That’s the core of who we are, walking with women in hard moments,” Runyan said. “I think my medical background gives me the knowledge that I need to do the medical side of it. But the rest of my life experience, I think, is what pulls me in to be able to sit with a woman when they’re in hard moments…We’re often sitting with women when they’re in the hardest point of their life trying to make hard decisions.”

Runyan clarified that Vitality aims to inform, not “coerce.” She believes the staff members are nonjudgmental and there to help.

“A lot of people think that we’re there to help them make that decision or to force them to make a decision. Lots of times, women will make decisions that we don’t agree with. But that’s not our job to be judgmental or to try to coerce them into making this decision,” she explained. “Our job is to really just give them the knowledge, the information that they need, and then to be with them, be present in those moments while they make those decisions.”

As a nurse, Runyan had experience caring for people in rehabilitation and hospital settings. After a stint working for a plastic surgeon in Florida, she returned to the Riverbend region and took the job with Vitality because “it lines up with so much of where [her] heart is.”

Her husband is a pastor and the two of them have gone on several mission trips together. They also have 14 kids, many of them adopted. Runyan believes these life experiences have helped mold her into someone who is compassionate and eager to help.

Duty agrees, adding that the entire staff at Vitality is focused on giving back. She thinks people care about the community they serve, and she is proud to be part of the team.

“This is probably the healthiest team with the most qualified staff with people that are doing it beyond the paycheck. They’re doing it because their hearts are in it, because they truly care about the outcome and mission of the organization,” Duty said. “This has been the most rewarding thing I’ve done.”

She added that Vitality is currently sponsoring a Baby Bottle campaign, wherein community members can fill an empty baby bottle with donations and return the money to the clinic. Additionally, if you buy coffee from Seven Weeks Coffee, the company will donate 15% of proceeds to Vitality.

Duty and Runyan believe this is a valuable cause. They said they work closely with individuals who are struggling to provide them with the resources they need.

“We really love these women who come in, and we care about them. We don’t just care about them in that moment. We care about their future,” Runyan added. “We just try to do whatever we can to find them the resources that they need or just to be there for them.”
