This year’s event will be held in YWCA’s newly renovated gymnasium—an almost 100-year-old space that has been thoughtfully revitalized. Improvements include freshly painted walls, newly refinished floors, new safety padding to protect players, and brand-new collegiate-level basketball goals. These renovations were made possible through the generous support of Jayne and John Simmons and the Alton Foundation.

Tammy Smith, CEO of A Precious Organization, originally launched the event with a vision of bringing the community and law enforcement closer together. “We were looking for meaningful ways to connect our community with the police in a positive setting,” said Smith. “YWCA gym was a natural home for this effort, and by focusing on our youth, ‘Ballin’ With A Cop’ was created. Seeing it grow into its 9th year is incredibly rewarding, and we look forward to continuing this tradition.”

Dorothy Hummel, Executive Director of YWCA, emphasized the importance of the event in building lasting relationships. “‘Ballin’ With A Cop’ is about creating space for connection, understanding, and trust,” said Hummel. “When young people and officers come together through something as universal as basketball, it breaks down barriers and builds mutual respect. We’re especially excited to host this year’s event in our beautifully renovated gym, which reflects our commitment to providing safe, high-quality spaces for our community.”

Participating officers also highlighted the impact of the event. “Events like this give us the opportunity to engage with youth in a positive and relaxed environment,” said Chief Jarrett Ford of the Alton Police Department. “It helps strengthen relationships and shows that we’re all part of the same community.”

The event is free and open to the public. Youth teams of five are encouraged to participate, and refreshments—including pizza, drinks, and cookies—will be provided. Those interested in forming a team can contact the YWCA at 618.465.7774. Youth of all ages are welcome.

By bringing youth and law enforcement together on the court, “Ballin’ With A Cop” continues to foster a sense of unity, belonging, and shared purpose—one game at a time.
