ALTON – A local man accused of firing a weapon towards an occupied vehicle and causing a traffic crash while under the influence of alcohol remains in custody on felony charges.
Mylen T. Felton, 23, of Alton, was charged on April 20, 2026 with one count each of aggravated discharge of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated driving while under the influence, and aggravated unlawful possession of weapons, each Class 4 felonies.
The day prior on April 19, Felton allegedly discharged a firearm from a moving Nissan Altima occupied by another person towards another vehicle, a blue Dodge Ram, which he knew or should have known was also occupied.
On the same date, Felton reportedly drove the Nissan Altima on East St. Louis Avenue in East Alton while under the influence of alcohol. He was reportedly involved in a motor vehicle crash which caused the other Nissan Altima occupant to suffer a spinal injury.
The firearm, which was uncased, loaded, and immediately accessible at the time of the offense, was a 9mm handgun which was unlawful for Felton to possess as he had no valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card or Concealed Carry License (CCL).
A petition to deny Felton’s pretrial release from custody was filed by the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office. According to the petition, officers located video showing “a muzzle flash coming from a white Nissan traveling on Edwardsville Road, in the direction of a blue Dodge Ram, also in traffic.” Officers later found a bullet hole in a nearby residence, as well as a 9mm shell casing in the roadway.
“Minutes later, the white Nissan was involved in a traffic crash in East Alton, with the vehicle striking a residence at high speeds. Defendant was identified as the driver and showed signs of intoxication,” the petition states. “Defendant was found at the crash scene with a victim passenger, who was severely injured in the crash and transported for treatment.”
Felton later admitted to being involved in a confrontation in Alton with an individual known to him as “H” who was later seen in the blue Dodge Ram in Wood River. Felton also admitted to firing the weapon and crashing the vehicle he was driving.
“Defendant admitted to discharging his firearm from the moving white Nissan, then driving at high speeds, resulting in the crash,” the petition states. “Defendant claimed that the driver of the blue truck was displaying a firearm, but that claim could not be confirmed by video, forensics, or any other witness statement.”
The Wood River Police Department presented the case against Felton, who currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
