Marquette jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half. Alex Stephan scored the opening goal for the Lady Explorers off an assist from Izzi Hough.
Later in the half, Alivia Noss found the back of the net to make it 2-0, with Hough picking up her second assist of the night.
Alton got on the board in the second half when Elizabeth Sorbie scored on a broken play inside the box, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
“We got disorganized in the backfield and we hate to give up a goal. We knew they were going to play hard — they are well coached,” Marquette coach Brian Hoener said.
The Explorers responded with back-to-back second-half goals from Hough to put the match away. Alex Stephan and Summer Redd each recorded assists on Hough’s goals.
“When the ball is at Hough’s foot, good things happen. She sees the field well and distributes the ball well,” Hoener said.
Marquette returns to action Tuesday against Metro-East Lutheran Knights, while Alton travels to face Granite City Warriors Tuesday.
