HARDIN - Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies arrested a 68-year-old Hardin man recently after a reported domestic disturbance involving a firearm in Hardin.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said West-Central 911 Dispatch notified the agency at about 2:15 p.m. on April 2, 2026, of a “Domestic Disturbance in Progress, involving a firearm” in Hardin in Calhoun County.
Deputies responded immediately and arrived at 2:20 p.m., the Calhoun Sheriff’s Office said.
Calhoun Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Chris Barnes identified and detained a male suspect and conducted an investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
The agency also worked with the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations Unit in the processing of the scene and evidence.
After an investigation, Ronald N. Smith, age 68, of Hardin, was arrested for the following offenses:
• Reckless Discharge of a Firearm
• Unlawful Restraint
• Domestic Battery – Bodily Harm
Smith was arrested without incident and was booked into the Pike County Jail, where he is being held without bond, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said it would like to thank civilians on scene who assisted in de-escalation, West-Central 911 Dispatch, and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigations Unit.
