Byron, Carlson, Petri & Kalb Female Athlete Of Month: Sofia Rossetto Scores Last-Minute Equalizer In Thrilling Draw At Edwardsville

EDWARDSVILLE - Sofia Rossetto is a senior striker for the girls' soccer team at Father McGivney Catholic High School and has found the back of the net nine times this season. Her latest goal may be the most important of the season to date.

Rossetto scored in the 79th minute on April 29, 2026, to rescue a point for the Griffins in a 1-1 draw at Edwardsville in a thrilling match at Tiger Stadium, which saw Edwardsville dominate the play for the first 20 minutes of the match, with McGivney slowly but surely getting back into it.

Sofia is a Byron, Carlson, Petri & Kalb Female Athlete of the Month for the Griffins.

Rossetto also has six assists to go along with her nine goals for a total of 24 points, as the Griffins are currently enjoying a stellar season at 14-1-2. In her postgame interview, Rossetto expressed the thrill of getting the equalizer and what it meant to her.

"It was a really great way to come back," Rossetto said, "and I really think it shows how much grit and how much McGivney can compete with these big schools."

Rossetto described her tying goal as being in the right place at the right time.

"It was great," Rossetto said. "Bristol Ellis played a great ball into the box. I saw it bounce in at the 18, and I just knew I had to go and attack it. It went in, and I was so happy. The team was around me, cheering."

It was the second year in a row that McGivney scored to break Edwardsville's heart. In the 2025 match at Bouse Road, the Griffins scored off a corner at the death to win 1-0 over the Tigers. The four points that McGivney took away from the two matches were very important, indeed.

The Griffins have been playing well against quality opponents thus far this season, and Rossetto has also played well individually.

"I think we've been doing really well," Rossetto said. "I think our team has so much more to grow, and I think we're going to be a real threat in the postseason."

Her goals and ambitions for herself and her team include a trip to the IHSA Class 1A finals at North Central College in Naperville in June.

"I know our overall goal is to win state," Rossetto said. "But we've first got to take it step-by-step, and focus on these next few games coming up before the postseason. Then we have to play it from there."

Rossetto is definitely looking ahead to the upcoming playoff race and is confident that the Griffins can do well.

"I know we're really excited, and we've still got a lot to grow and work hard," Rossetto said.
