ALTON - Meme Evans loves building relationships with her students.
This is one of Evans’s strengths as a fourth grade teacher at West Elementary School in the Alton Community Unit School District #11. This Teacher Appreciation Week, she remembers why she started working in the education field and her passion for helping students succeed.
“My favorite part of the job is building relationships with the students. They are all unique and have something to teach me,” she said. “I also love when I am out and about in the community and a former student recognizes me. That truly makes me feel like I’ve made a difference.”
Evans always felt like teaching was “the natural career path” for her. Both of her parents worked in education, and it was an easy decision to follow in their footsteps. She started teaching seventh grade as soon as she graduated college. Nine years later, she transitioned to her fourth grade classroom.
It can be difficult to manage space and time constraints as a teacher. Evans is dedicated to preparing her students for the next grade level and making sure they have everything they need to succeed. This commitment means she sometimes worries about managing time and classroom space, but she always does everything she can to make sure her students are supported.
Beyond her days at school, Evans works part-time at Target and enjoys seeing students outside of the classroom. She also loves cooking, doing hot yoga and reading.
She is proudest of the relationships she has built with her students, and she looks forward to seeing them go on to further success in fifth grade. But she’s always there for them if they need her, and she will continue to cheer them on throughout their lives.
“Every day is different,” she added. “To this day, I still enjoy the creativity that teaching allows. Every group of students that I teach bring a new set of strategies and ideas to the table.”
Thank you to Mrs. Evans for your work as a teacher!
