
WOOD RIVER - Jerald Downs, a junior at East Alton-Wood River High School, is being recognized for his baseball skills, crediting his ability to stay calm in high-stress situations and remain focused as his best traits.

Downs said he has played baseball since he was 7 and is drawn to the sport’s unpredictability and challenge.
Downs is a Midwest Members Credit Union Male Athlete of the Month.
“I love how anything can happen at any time, and it's a game of failure,” he said. “Hall of Fame players fail many times before."
He also pointed to the role his family has played in his development. Downs said he would like to thank his parents “for funding and supporting me through my whole career.”
Tim Bond, his East Alton-Wood River baseball coach, has been a key to his development as a player, Downs said.
Downs said his high school career and involvement in sports have helped him "control my emotions and become a better leader."
He said he hopes to continue playing baseball in college and is interested in pursuing a law degree or becoming a firefighter.
In addition to baseball, Downs plays football as a linebacker and tight end. He also listed fishing with friends and family as a hobby.
Among his classroom accomplishments, Downs said he has been named student of the month.
