Jones is a special education teacher for the fifth grade at East Elementary School in the Alton Community Unit School District #11. This Teacher Appreciation Week, the district is taking a moment to turn the tables and celebrate her for the difference she makes in kids’ lives every day.

“I decided to become a special education teacher because I wanted to make a meaningful difference for students who learn differently,” she shared. “I am passionate about meeting students where they are and helping them grow academically, socially, and emotionally. I value the opportunity to individualize instruction, build strong relationships, and advocate for students so they can access the curriculum and feel successful. Seeing my students gain confidence and independence is what motivates me.”

Jones graduated from Alton High School and knew she wanted to someday return to the district as a teacher. She enjoys working with fifth grade students in the special education setting because it is deeply rewarding to know she is helping them grow.

She thanked her colleagues, including the paraprofessional with whom she collaborates closely every day. These interactions make it easier for her to balance some of the job’s challenges, specifically managing behaviors and planning individualized instruction while giving each student the attention they need.

But while this can be difficult, Jones handles it well and always makes sure her students are supported. In her role, she is helping students grow both academically and personally. Jones loves watching her students become more confident and celebrating their progress with them.

Outside of school, Jones spends time with her husband, children and two grandchildren. She enjoys working on projects around her house and in her yard, and she is always taking care of her animals.

Jones hopes her work with students will continue to impact them long after they leave her classroom. She aims to be an encouraging presence in their lives, and the students surely appreciate her eagerness to help them and her cheerleader’s spirit.

“I truly enjoy working with students and helping them succeed both academically and personally,” she added. “I am proud to represent the Alton School District and give back to my community by supporting and building strong relationships with my students.”

Thank you to Sarah Jones for your work as a teacher!
