ALTON - Shannon Beloit always knew she wanted to be a teacher.
Beloit teaches at the Early Childhood Center in the Alton Community Unit School District #11. This Teacher Appreciation Week, she is reflecting on the decision that brought her to Alton and her love for working with young kids.
“Becoming a teacher made sense,” she said. “I knew I wanted to do something that impacted others and would never be boring.”
Early childhood education is certainly far from boring. Beloit enjoys working with young kids to help them learn reading and math, but it’s equally important to help them develop social and life skills. She tries hard to educate the whole child and give them the confidence they need to become functioning, successful people.
She loves “seeing it click” when a child finally understands a new concept or idea. It means a lot to her to know that her students are learning and are proud of themselves for what they’ve accomplished.
When she isn’t in the classroom, Beloit spends a lot of time with her friends and family. She also enjoys taking walks with her dog, listening to live music, and being by the river.
Teaching comes with challenges, as Beloit said there’s never enough time or energy to do everything she wants to do. But this speaks to Beloit’s commitment to her students and her desire to give them the best education and experiences she can. She works hard to make sure they have everything they need to be successful.
Her students reap the benefits of Beloit’s dedication. While they might be too young to truly appreciate it, they are sure to look back at their time in her classroom with gratitude and admiration.
“When a child looks at me with their eyes bright with the excitement of accomplishment — I love it when that confidence hits,” she added. “I love all the different personalities, seeing growth, and celebrating the smallest wins.”
Thank you to Mrs. Beloit for your work as a teacher!
