Jamie LummaJERSEYVILLE – This Teacher Appreciation Week, Jamie Lumma recalled the student “firsts” and milestones that have made her 32-year career with Jersey 100 especially meaningful as she prepares for retirement this year.

After teaching first grade at Dow Elementary School for 17 years, Lumma transitioned to first grade at Grafton Elementary School when Dow closed in 2011. She was also a proud recipient of the Meritorious Service Award from the Illinois State Board of Education in 2024.

Lumma said she decided to become a teacher because she “wanted a job where every day matters.”

“I always loved school and I had so many great teachers in the Jersey Community School District that inspired me,” Lumma said. “I wanted to make a difference in kids' lives!”

Some of the most rewarding parts of the job for her have been the “aha moments” for her students, and seeing how far they’ve come from where they first started.

“The instant a student finally gets it – whether it is reading an entire book for the first time, leveling up, or solving a math problem. I love seeing their confidence grow,” Lumma said.

The hardest part of teaching for Lumma has been trying to meet each of her student’s unique needs as they enter the classroom with different academic, social, and emotional experiences. While these and other factors are difficult to balance at times, the challenge underscores Lumma’s genuine care for her students.

“The hardest part is that I care deeply about every one of my students, and I want to help them reach their goals and overcome their challenges,” Lumma said.

Working with first graders has been especially enjoyable for Lumma given their curiosity, energy, and “excitement for learning.” She said the many milestones she’s witnessed over her 32-year career with Jersey 100 have made the experience even more rewarding.

“I’ve had the privilege of being part of so many ‘firsts’ – seeing them lose their first tooth, solve problems on their own, make a new friend, and even spell multisyllabic words for the very first time,” Lumma said. “Each of these milestones, big or small, is incredibly special to witness, and being a part of those moments is what has made teaching so meaningful to me.”

Thank you to Mrs. Lumma for your 32 years of service to Jersey Community Unit School District 100!
