The renovation became possible largely through the extraordinary generosity and leadership of Jayne and John Simmons, whose significant contribution helped bring new life to one of the YWCA’s most heavily utilized spaces. Their investment reflects a deep commitment to the children, families, and community members who walk through the YWCA’s doors every day.
The Alton Foundation also played a vital role in supporting the project through additional funding that helped advance the YWCA’s vision for a safe, inspiring, and community-centered facility.
For decades, the gymnasium had seen only limited improvements since the 1970s despite welcoming thousands of visitors each year. Today, the renovated space stands as a symbol of community investment, opportunity, and belonging.

Renovations include:
· Newly refinished hardwood gym floors
· Freshly painted gymnasium walls and interior
· New collegiate-level basketball goals with glass backboards
· New protective wall padding designed to enhance player safety
These upgrades build upon other recent improvements to the facility, including a new exterior entrance door funded through a grant from Agency for Community Transit and a new electronic scoreboard made possible through previous support from the Alton Foundation.
“This project represents so much more than a renovated gym,” said Dorothy Hummel, Executive Director of YWCA Southwestern Illinois. “Jayne and John Simmons understood the importance of creating a place where young people feel welcomed, valued, and inspired. Their generosity will impact thousands of children and families for years to come.”
The revitalized gym already pulses with activity and energy. The sound of basketballs bouncing and children laughing once again fills the space. Newly refinished floors shine beneath running feet while coaches, mentors, and families gather to encourage young athletes and build lasting relationships.
YWCA designed the renovated gym to serve both youth and adults through athletics, mentorship programs, youth development activities, and community events. The space reflects the organization’s continued commitment to investing not only in facilities, but in people.
Key contributors to the project included Taylor McCall, Beyond Basketball, Mark Hannigan, contractor, YWCA staff members, community partners, and supporters who worked tirelessly to help bring the vision to life.
“This is the kind of place where memories are made,” Hummel said. “It is a place where children can grow in confidence, build friendships, learn teamwork, and begin to believe in what is possible for their future.”
YWCA invites the community to visit the newly renovated gymnasium and celebrate a renewed space that once again serves as a hub for connection, opportunity, and hope.
