“It’s going to be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our nation’s birthday,” Mayor Art Risavy said. “We are fortunate to have so many community organizations that are contributing to these thoughtful, fun activities.”
Edwardsville’s America 250 celebration will include events from Sunday, June 28, through Saturday, July 4, 2026 at various locations. Additional self-guided or group activities are planned for June 13 through July 3 at the Edwardsville Public Library, 112 S. Kansas Street. The activities are part of a nationwide series of festivities in honor of America’s semiquincentennial, or the day in 1776 when the Declaration of Independence was officially adopted.
“In the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln captured best the importance of the Declaration of Independence when he said that our forefathers brought forth a new nation conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” said Stephen Hansen, part of the Board of Directors of the Madison County Historical Society, one of the groups heading up the local events. “Celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence is more important than ever. We come together to express our dedication to the principles that made our nation great.”

The Edwardsville Public Library will host additional opportunities for adults aimed at sparking conversation, including creative writing sessions and self-led collage artwork. Those activities run from mid-June through July 3.
“The United States is still a young country, uniquely founded with experimental, visionary, idealism,” said Library Director Diana Brawley Sussman. “In the past 250 years we have been, and still are, trying, succeeding, and failing to live up to our own visionary ideals. This 250th anniversary isn’t just a celebration of longevity, it’s an opportunity to take an honest look at our past, present, and potential future, asking what it takes to honor every person’s rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
