Lt. Miller Retires After 27 Years at Glen Carbon Police

GLEN CARBON - Lt. Ned Miller, a 27-year veteran of the Glen Carbon Police Department, will retire June 23, 2026, after serving in roles that included patrol officer, detective, patrol sergeant, and, for the past seven years, lieutenant, village officials said.

Miller joined the department in June 1999 shortly after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice administration from Truman State University. Over his career, he served the Village of Glen Carbon in multiple capacities and “has been known as a trusted counselor and mentor to his fellow employees at the Glen Carbon Police Department,” according to information provided by the village.

In December 2021, Chief Todd Link awarded Miller the Chief’s Commendation Medal for work in solving 10 residential burglaries and home invasions, including executing multiple search warrants and the arrest and federal prosecution of two federal fugitives from Nevada, the village said.

During comments at the Village Board meeting on May 12, Link said, “Ned Miller has been a true friend and a tremendous asset to our police agency for nearly three decades. All of us at the Glen Carbon Police Department wish him a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.”

Miller also led key initiatives within the department. When the Glen Carbon Police Department started one of the first drone programs in the region, he spearheaded the purchase and implementation of drones, researching state and federal laws related to drone operations and ensuring drone pilots were trained and compliant with required laws and Federal Aviation Administration procedures. The department has used drones on “life-saving, crime scene control, and crash reconstruction missions,” the village said.

When the department created a Business District assignment to address theft and retail theft concerns in the village, Miller played a role in ensuring officers carried out their new duties in a manner intended to enhance public safety and reduce theft-related crimes, according to the village.

In May 2022, Miller attended the Administrative Officer’s Course of the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville, where he graduated in Session 147 as a Dean’s Scholar.
