After Day 80 of Iran War, Duckworth and Colleagues Force Eighth Vote on War Powers Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. – After 80 days of Donald Trump’s unjustified war of choice in Iran, combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) will join U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Andy Kim (D-NJ)—along with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY)—in forcing a vote on Senator Kaine’s War Powers Resolution to immediately withdraw U.S. Armed Forces from hostilities within and against Iran. This week’s vote comes after a record three Republicans voted last week to support a War Powers Resolution to end the use of military force in Iran. Recent polls continue to show widespread disapproval of the war against Iran.

“We got three Republicans to vote in favor of our last War Powers Resolution—the closest we’ve come to ending Trump’s illegal war in Iran—because Republicans are finally starting to realize how costly and disastrous this conflict is,” said Duckworth. “More than 80 days since Trump launched this war of choice, the Trump Administration still has yet to articulate a consistent goal or desired end state, let alone how we could get there. Waging an unjustified conflict with no coherent strategy for how to end it is a recipe for a forever war—and the quicker Republicans can grasp that, the quicker we can pass our War Powers Resolution and rein in Trump’s chaos. I urge the rest of my Republican colleagues to grow a spine and finally vote with us to do just that.”

“We are in a fragile ceasefire, but President Trump continues to threaten Iran with more bombs to further a war that has already had enormous costs to all Americans, especially our military,” said Kaine. “The Senate should use this moment to do what we should have done before the war started—discuss the rationale, strategy, end state, and costs to American taxpayers and our economy. This war also places a significant burden on our servicemembers and military assets, and there is growing momentum to end this unnecessary conflict. The Trump-Vance Administration’s refusal to get authorization from Congress and share adequate information with us about the war, including the legal opinion to justify it, should compel all members to do what the Constitution requires and deliberate over whether we should send our sons and daughters to risk their lives.”

This is the eighth time Democrats have forced a vote to end Trump’s illegal war, and Republicans have instead voted to rubberstamp it:

1. On March 4th, Republicans blocked Senator Kaine’s (D-VA) resolution 47-53.
2. On March 18th, Republicans blocked Senator Booker’s (D-NJ) resolution 47-53.
3. On March 24th, Republicans blocked Senator Murphy’s (D-CT) resolution 47-53.
4. On April 15th, Republicans blocked Senator Duckworth’s (D-IL) resolution 47-52.
5. On April 22nd, Republicans blocked Senator Baldwin’s (D-WI) resolution 46-51.
6. On April 29nd, Republicans blocked Senator Schiff’s (D-CA) resolution 47-50.
7. On May 13th, Republicans blocked Senator Merkley’s (D-WA) resolution 49-50.
