Nine weeks of live bands have been scheduled for the Night Market on Broadway, which takes place every Thursday in June and July from 7:00-10:00 p.m. Offering a diverse mix of styles and sounds, there’s something for everyone at Night Market, which is returning to the green space on 3rd Street next door to Catdaddy’s again this season! Local favorite Spillie Nelson gets the party started on 6/4 with their familiar favorite jams, followed by Miller Floyd on 6/11 playing Blues, Rock, Country and Pop. The Deal on 6/18 is a side project of members of Jake’s Leg, so you can expect a healthy dose of Grateful Dead tunes, and then on 6/25 The Wherehouse Project will take the stage with their unique style of old school cover tunes from the early aughts - think Dave Matthews and Rusted Root. Night Market will rock America’s 250th celebration week with Red, White, and Floyd - an incredible Pink Floyd tribute and light show on 7/2. Two Shots of Whiskey will bring some country and soul on 7/9, and Crystal Lady performs original music on 7/16, featuring fierce female vocals on top of a hard-driving, alternative rock power trio. The Vibe will bring high energy, foot stomping classic rock on 7/23. Wrapping up the season will be the smooth sounds of the Yacht Rockers on 7/30. The musical crown jewel of the year is the Mississippi Earthtones Festival: a free art, music and conservation festival all in one! The festival, co-hosted by Alton Main Street, the Sierra Club, and Jacoby Arts Center, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, taking place on Saturday, September 19th from Noon until 10:00 p.m. at Alton’s Riverfront Amphitheater. MEF attracts thousands of community members to the riverfront every 3rd Saturday in September to enjoy a fantastic line-up of live music. Festival goers will be treated to original tunes from the Matt Taul Band from Noon to 1:45 p.m. Crowd favorite one-man-ten-piece-band Jason "Gordo" Gordon will perform from both 1:45-2:45 and 6:00-7:00 p.m. From 3:15-6:00 we are excited to add Master Blaster Stevie Wonder Tribute to the mix; the band’s frontman is STL celebrity Steve Ewing from The Urge! As is tradition, MEF’s headlining act will be Jake's Leg - the longest running Grateful Dead Tribute in the world at 50 years and counting. While the band draws mainly on the repertoire of America's favorite psychedelic blues-rock jug band, the musicians of Jake's Leg naturally bring their own sensibilities to each part: the introspective singer-songwriter, the jazz stylings of an improvising soloist, rock-solid dance grooves and mind-bending jams are all in play at their shows, which also include songs by Bob Dylan, Phish and much more. The Mississippi Earthtones Festival is truly a family-friendly event, with a kids zone, environmental education booths, earth friendly activities, art installations, and many delicious local food & beverage choices.
The Downtown Alton Chili Cook-Off on Sunday, 10/18 will return to last year’s location - FLOCK Food Truck Park! From Noon until 3:00 p.m., popular local favorite Psychedelic Symphony will perform their acoustic folk rock while you enjoy the tasty submissions to the cook-off. Participants get to vote for the coveted People’s Choice Silver Ladle!
