Police said officers found the woman on the front porch near the entrance of the residence, suffering from a gunshot wound. A 29-year-old man and 36-year-old Tyrell Billey, of Fairview Heights, were taken into custody at the scene.
Investigators determined the woman was inadvertently struck by gunfire during a domestic-related altercation between the two men that began in the driveway of the residence, according to the O’Fallon Police Department.
The woman was taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police said the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services processed the scene. Firearms, shell casings, and other items of evidentiary value were recovered.
Also present during the incident were an 18-year-old woman and two juveniles, police said. None was injured, and all were later released to family members.
The case was presented to the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office. Billey was charged with two Class X felony counts of home invasion and transported to the St. Clair County Jail pending court proceedings.
The 29-year-old man was released without charges.
Authorities noted that the charges are not evidence of guilt and that Billey is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
