Gillespie’s Chaz Oberkfell was among the top performers in 1A, winning both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200. Oberkfell took the 1,600 in 4:14.66 and won the 3,200 in 9:08.17.
Oberkfell said winning both distance races was tough, but he was very proud of his finish in all three events - the 800 meters, 1,600 meters, and 3,200 meters.
He said he gave all glory to God, thanked his coaches, and said it felt great to bring home two championships.
Metro East Lutheran’s Jack Shank placed fourth in the 1,600 in 4:21.86.
Shank said he was “very satisfied” to place fourth at state in the 1,600 meters.
“I was not very competitive when I started as a freshman, but I broke 16 minutes this year in cross country for the past three years, so I was slow but steady with improvement. I am really proud of what I did today.
"My Metro East Lutheran coaches are wonderful, and Coach Reiseck taught me what running was about in cross country. I thank my family, my girlfriend, teammates, and friends who run with me for their support, and I thank Jesus for teaching me the value of hard work and dedication. I ended up here because of that,” Shank said.
Father McGivney’s 4x800 relay team of Gus Range, Eric Rybak, Will Rakers, and Liam Schmidt placed second in 7:59.36, breaking eight minutes. McGivney’s 4x400 relay team of Owen Weissert, Will Rakers, Gus Range, and Liam Schmidt finished fourth in 3:24.28.
