Fake Stick-Up Video Sparks Police Warning in Fairview Heights

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS - The Fairview Heights Police Department said officers responded Friday, June 5, 2026, to a report of a suspicious incident at First Community Credit Union in Fairview Heights, where investigators later determined there was no actual threat after a man entered the bank, raised a stick and said, “Attention everyone, this is a stick-up” while recording the encounter for a social media post.

Police said the call came in at about 4:53 p.m. Friday. Officers quickly investigated and found the incident was an attempt to create a viral video, according to the department.

The department said that, regardless of intent, comments and actions that simulate a robbery or other violent crime are taken seriously by law enforcement, financial institutions, and the public.

“Such conduct can create fear among employees and customers, disrupt business operations, and result in a significant emergency response,” the department said.

Police said social media trends and prank videos often carry unintended consequences and that what is meant as a joke can be perceived as a legitimate threat, particularly inside a bank or other public setting.

“Incidents of this nature place employees, customers, responding officers, and the individual involved at unnecessary risk,” the department said. “Actions that cause others to reasonably believe that a crime is occurring can trigger significant law enforcement responses and may expose individuals to criminal or civil consequences.”

Following the investigation, police documented the incident and issued the individual a trespass warning prohibiting him from returning to the business.

The department said public safety remains its top priority and that all reports of potential threats will be investigated thoroughly. Police also thanked the employees who reported the incident and encouraged community members to continue reporting suspicious activity when they believe a threat may exist.
