Adam Moser, Ryan Hartz and Cole Hockman enjoy every game they play, and they’re gaining a deeper appreciation for Alton and the people who make up the town. As they reflected on the season so far and shared more about their goals for the rest of the summer, they noted that the experience has been a lot of fun and also a great chance to improve their skills.

“Obviously, it’s a serious game, but at the end of the day, there are kids in the stands that are here having a great time,” Hartz said. “You want to win super bad, you want to play super good, but at the same time, it’s still a game. To play well, you’ve got to have fun and enjoy it.”

The players noted that the beginning of the season included several away games, which can be tough. They’re eager to be back on home turf, playing at Lloyd Hopkins Field in Gordon Moore Park.

But it was fun getting to know their teammates on the road. A few of the players have played together before, but many of them met for the first time this summer. It’s been exciting to welcome new players and mentor the younger guys on the team, the three players agreed.

They’re also excited to have a win on their record. All three players compete on the collegiate level, but it’s been a new experience to play in the Prospect League. They’re hopeful that their record continues to improve.

“It’s a relief finally getting that first win under our belt. We’ve got a lot more confidence,” Moser explained. “It’s been awesome. This is my first time I’ve really played competitive summer ball. I’ve played in local leagues, but the Prospect League is a different level, so it’s been a lot of fun.”

Additionally, getting to know Alton has been a great experience for the players. Moser, Hartz and Hockman remember the fun of Alton’s Memorial Day parade and the “small town vibe” that brought them closer to their teammates and their adopted summer town. They appreciate that so many Alton residents are rooting for them.

“I would say that people really care,” Hockman said. “It’s a small town, but all the fans have been fantastic. You can tell that they really care about the team and they want to come out and show support. We’re really grateful for all that.”

The boys agreed that they are trying to “cherish every day” they have on the River Dragons team. They love the game and they’re dedicated to the team. It’s important to them to play hard and enjoy it.

“It’s just a complete game,” Hartz added. “Even though we started out rough, we had some games where we hit it really well. We had some games where we pitched it really well. And then some games we just did not play defense. It’s kind of a complete game where we’re firing on all cylinders. I think, if we do that, you don’t lose doing that.”
