Alton Junior Legion Piles Up 11 Hits In Decisive Victory

An early burst at Gordon F. Moore Park set the tone as Alton paired timely hitting with sharp defense in a convincing performance Monday.

ALTON - The Alton Junior Legion baseball squad defeated Washington on Monday, June 29, 2026, at Gordon F. Moore Park, using an early offensive surge, 11 hits and a clean defensive performance to secure the 12-1 win.

Alton Jr. Legion got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Max Laird tripled down the right field line, Fletcher Groppel walked and Alton scored on a wild pitch, with each play producing one run.

Alton added two runs in the second inning. Laird tripled down the right field line to make it 5-0.

Alton extended its lead with two runs in the bottom of the third on RBI walks by Chris Rayfield and August Landuyt.

Alton then broke the game open in the fourth, scoring five runs on six hits. Zach Thornton tripled to drive in two runs, Will McCormick singled to score one run, Rayfield singled to bring home one run, and Laird was hit by a pitch to force in another run.

Clayton McCormick earned the win for Alton. He allowed two hits and one run over 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and walking three. Tristan Ferguson appeared in relief.

Tyson Pratt took the loss for Washington. The right-hander pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on four hits while striking out two and walking four.

Alton finished with 11 hits. Laird drove in three runs and went 2-for-3. Landuyt led Alton in hits, going 3-for-3. Alton also drew nine walks, with McCormick and Groppel collecting two each.

For Washington, Quinton Nowak went 1-for-2 and drove in the team’s only run. Nowak, Owen Tod and Andrew Koirtyohann each had one hit.

Post 126 is now 12-8-1 on the season, and competes in the Play 9 tournament this weekend in Belleville, meeting the Rawlings Tigers Mach under-16 team Friday afternoon at 2:15 p.m., then go against the Missouri Mariners Gold under-16 team at 4:20 p.m. on Friday. After having the Fourth of July off, the junior Legionnaires finish play in the Play 9 tourney Sunday afternoon against an opponent to be determined at 12 noon, then host Jerseyville Post 492 July 6 at 6 p.m., then play on July 7 with a doubleheader against Elsberry, Mo. Post 226 at home at 6 and 8 p.m.
