Vitality is a pro-life, faith-based pregnancy center that works with pregnant people and new parents. Executive Director Jackie Duty explained that the organization recently received an art grant that allowed them to partner with a local painting studio to offer the art therapy experience.

“It’s just amazing to see these women come alive in the process,” Duty said. “This is what’s so great about being in the community. Working with different groups, different organizations, they’ll give you tips and say, hey, did you see this grant that just hit the table?…Opportunities open up when you’re in community.”

Duty met Vickie Hopkins, owner of Party on Broadway, at a recent event and was struck by how “passionate” Hopkins is about the arts. When Vitality received the art grant, Duty knew she wanted to partner with Hopkins to provide the art therapy experience.

Vitality invited several new mothers to a painting party, where they painted canvases and engaged with Hopkins’s business. The experience was a chance to unwind and create without pressure.

“I think they were really proud of what they did, and I felt like they really did enjoy that time away, because they don’t normally get that,” Hopkins said. “It put their heads in a good spot. They didn’t have to worry about anyone else.”

In the next few weeks, Duty and Hopkins will display their creations at The Wedge in Alton. The community is invited to attend the art show at The Wedge, where they can admire the artwork and meet the artists. The date and time are to be announced, but Duty is planning for late July.

Hopkins added that all of the mothers left with art supplies so they can continue to create on their own time. She hopes the experience was therapeutic and that the moms can continue to practice art as a way to calm down and express themselves.

“Maybe they had a stressful day and they just need something to make things levelheaded again,” she explained. “As a stay-at-home mom or a mom that’s trying to work and then you come home, sometimes you need something that can just balance you out. And I feel like painting can do that for a lot of people. If I’m really stressed, surprisingly enough, painting is what I like to do.”

The experience was empowering for the mothers, and Duty is proud that Vitality could make it happen. She expressed her appreciation for Hopkins, Party on Broadway, and other local businesses and organizations that support their work.

She added that Vitality is preparing to launch a capital campaign on July 7 that will run through Dec. 31, 2026. Their goal is to redo their parking lot and update their technology and security systems with the money they raise.

Vitality is also offering a grief support crafting group in addition to their other resources aimed toward people experiencing unplanned pregnancies. Duty believes the organization will continue to expand in the coming months.

“This is just the beginning,” she said. “I feel like there’s going to be so many more things we can build, and we just don’t know how it’s going to grow.”
