ICC Offers Energy Efficiency Tips To Help Beat The Heat

Illinois Commerce Commission offers ways to stay cool while keeping electric bills in check amid peak summer rates.

SPRINGFIELD – “Dangerously high heat and humidity is expected to continue across Illinois over the holiday weekend, and we have several weeks of summer remaining,” said Illinois Commerce Commission Chairman Doug Scott. “We want Illinoisans to stay cool and safe, without putting themselves at financial risk of being unable to afford their electric bills.”

Consumers can keep their homes and businesses cool while lowering the energy impact of peak summertime electric rates by:

  1. Contacting your utility about programs to reduce energy usage during peak hours.
  2. Installing a programmable thermostat to control the temperature overnight.
  3. Scheduling regular AC maintenance visits and replacing filters regularly.
  4. Closing curtains and other window treatments to block the sun.
  5. Using ceiling or box fans to keep cool.
  6. Caulking or adding weather strips around doors and windows to seal any leaks.

About the Illinois Commerce Commission

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) is a quasi-judicial body made up of five Commissioners. Through its Public Utility Program, the Commission oversees the provision of adequate, reliable, efficient, and safe utility services at the least possible cost to Illinois citizens served by electric, natural gas, telecommunications, water, and sewer public utility companies. Through its Transportation Regulatory Program, the Commission oversees public safety and consumer protection programs with regard to intrastate commercial motor carriers of general freight, household goods movers, relocation towers, safety towers, personal property warehouses, and repossession agencies. The Commission’s Rail Safety Program also inspects and regulates the general safety of railroad tracks, facilities, and equipment in the state.
