Corwin and Haddorf Claim Edwardsville Futures Wildcard

EDWARDSVILLE - The team of Oscar Corwin of Elm Grove, Wisc. and Tyler Haddorf of Burnsville, Minn., won over Nicholas Shirley of Bloomington, Ind. and Alex Borbiu of Vernon Hills, Ill. in straight sets to win the one-day Doubles Shootout, a wildcard qualifier for the $30,000 Edwardsville Futures tennis tournament presented by The EGHM Foundation, on Friday afternoon at the Edwardsville Tennis Center.

A total of eight teams entered the tournament, which promoted the winner to a wildcard berth in the doubles portion of the Futures next week, and the teams were divided into two groups of four, with the teams with the best records facing off in the final for the berth into the doubles draw.

In Group A, Corwin and Haddorf swept all three of their matches, winning over Maksyn Chemogorov and Bogdan Zakharov in a walkover, defeating Jesse Hattrup and Jade Dynamic of Edwardsville 6-1, and taking a default win over Arhan Meka and Noah Suthar. Hattrup and Dynamic split their other two matches to finish in third in the group at 1-2, losing to Chemogorov and Zakharov 7-6 (7-3 in the tiebreak), and bounced back to win over Meka and Suthar 6-4.

In Group B, Shirley and Borbiu also swept their group matches, defeating Diego Alvarez-Britt and Morgan Woodson 7-6, taking a 6-1 win over Josh and Josiah Lawrence, then winning over Jake Brinker of Glen Carbon and Schaefer Bates of Edwardsville 6-1. Brinker and Bates lost their other two matches and finished in fourth with a 0-3 record, losing to Alvarez-Britt and Woodson 6-0, and to the Lawrence brothers 6-2.

In the final matches, Corwin and Haddorf won the wildcard berth into the doubles draw with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Shirley and Borbiu, while in the third-place match, Alvarez-Britt and Woodson defeated Meka and Suthar 6-2, 6-2. In the fifth-place contest, the Lawrence brothers played Hattrup and Dynamic, but no result was available.

Corwin and Haddorf advance to the doubles draw of the Futures.
