ALTON – A woman from Alton accused of illegally carrying a defaced handgun in a vehicle faces felonies in Madison County.
Brandy S. Garrett, 46, of Alton, was charged on July 31, 2026 with one count each of defacing identification marks of a firearm (a Class 3 felony) and aggravated unlawful possession of weapons (a Class 4 felony).

Garrett allegedly knowingly possessed a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun with a serial number that had been altered or removed on July 30, 2026.
Charging documents state Garrett carried the handgun in a motor vehicle which was uncased, loaded, and immediately accessible at the time of the offense. The firearm was illegal for Garrett to possess as she had not been issued a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card.
The Alton Police Department presented the case against Garrett, who was ordered released from custody pending trial.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
