ALTON – An Alton resident accused of escalating an argument by displaying and firing a weapon at someone as they drove away has been detained.
Kuwaka F. Isom, 53, of Alton, was charged on Aug. 12, 2026 with one count each of possession of a firearm with FOID revoked (a Class 3 felony), reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of weapons (both Class 4 felonies), and aggravated assault (a Class A misdemeanor).
Isom allegedly displayed a firearm in a threatening manner before discharging the weapon in a reckless manner while in close proximity to another individual, endangering the victim’s bodily safety on Aug. 10, 2026.
His possession of the weapon, a Springfield XD 9mm handgun, was unlawful as his Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card had been revoked at the time of the offense.
According to the state’s petition to deny Isom’s pretrial release from custody, the victim reported that he was arguing with Isom while sitting in his vehicle before Isom displayed a firearm. When the victim drove away, Isom reportedly “fired repeatedly.”
Officers later located Isom, who allegedly “admitted to being armed and firing during the confrontation,” the petition states.
The Alton Police Department presented the case against Isom, who currently remains in custody at the Madison County Jail.
All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
