Alton Shooting Leaves One Seriously Injured On East Sixth Street
Police say the victim was hospitalized after gunfire Thursday afternoon in Alton. Investigators are still searching for the suspect and asking the public for information.
ALTON — Alton Police are investigating a shooting that left one person seriously injured Thursday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2026, in the 800 block of East Sixth Street.

Officers were dispatched at about 1:52 p.m. Aug. 20, 2026, for a report of shots fired and a person shot, according to the Alton Police Department. Police said officers secured the scene and rendered aid to the victim until Alton Fire Department personnel arrived.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to a St. Louis-area hospital for further medical treatment because of serious injuries, police said.
At the same time, officers received information about where the suspect had fled and began searching the immediate area. Illinois State Police, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, East Alton Police Department, Collinsville Police Department and Highland Police Department assisted in the search, police said.
The suspect was not located.
Police said a preliminary investigation showed the people involved were familiar with each other.
