Bethalto Community Unit School District #8 is hosting its first Calculator Drive. People who have calculators they no longer use can connect with Civic Memorial to donate these tools. The goal, explained Principal Justin Newell, is to ensure no student lacks the supplies they need to learn.

“That’s one of the biggies that kids need,” he said. “Getting calculators in students’ hands can sometimes be difficult.”

Newell noted that scientific and graphing calculators are expensive to buy new, and many students need these models for their math and science classes. There is a particular need for TI 30-X calculators.

Many people buy these calculators for their own classes, then find they’re no longer needed after graduation.

“There are definitely calculators sitting unused in homes across our community,” Newell said. “At the same time, we have students who could benefit from those calculators every day. It just made sense to find a way to connect these two groups.”

Similar to a clothing or school supplies drive, the Calculator Drive invites people to donate new or gently used calculators to the school. These tools will then be distributed to students who need them.

If you have a “high-end” graphing calculator you would like to sell, you can also contact the school to be connected with a student who wants to buy the calculator at a reduced rate.

The ultimate goal is to make sure students have the supplies they need to succeed in their classes. Newell is eager to “make the most of the resources we have in our community,” and he is thankful for the people who are willing to give back to the district and help the students.

“The Bethalto community shows up every day for the kids,” he added.
