Friends of the 60s/Alton Black Alumni Association Hosts Annual Leo C. Cox Memorial Scholarship Golf Scramble to Invest in Future Leaders
Golfers, alumni, businesses and families gathered in Alton for fellowship and fundraising tied to a scholarship legacy rooted in service and educational advancement.
ALTON — Friends of the 60s/Alton Black Alumni Association hosted its annual Leo C. Cox Memorial Scholarship Golf Scramble in Alton, bringing alumni, community members, local businesses, families and supporters together to raise money for scholarships and educational opportunities for Alton High School students.

The golf scramble is one of FOS/ABAA’s signature fundraising events and supports students pursuing higher education and academic and career goals. The event also honors the legacy of Leo C. Cox through the association’s work in education and community service.
“Every swing, sponsorship, and contribution made represents an investment in the next generation of leaders,” said Rhonda Cox, event chair and niece of Leo C. Cox. “The continued support of our community allows us to open doors for deserving students and create opportunities that have a lasting impact.”
The annual event included fellowship, friendly competition and community support. Organizers said proceeds help the organization continue its focus on educational excellence and service.
“Service is both needed and shared by everyone. Each of us has a responsibility to give back and help strengthen our community,” said Staci Westfall-Herron, vice president of the Alton Black Alumni Association.
Dale Brice, a golf participant, said the event connected community and fundraising.
“There is no better feeling than to reminisce with fellow Altonians and raise money for a great cause at the same time,” Brice said.
The Alton Black Alumni Association thanked golfers, sponsors, volunteers and supporters for their participation and generosity. The organization said that support helps FOS/ABAA continue creating opportunities for students while strengthening the Alton community.
The Friends of the 60s/Alton Black Alumni Association’s mission is to reunite alumni who attended Alton area schools and use their life and career experiences to lead, strengthen and mobilize the Alton community to prepare youth for productive adulthood.
The organization began as a social organization to celebrate obstacles overcome by African American students who attended Alton High School in the 1960s as the school became integrated. Today, it is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educational advancement through the Leo C. Cox Memorial Scholarship.
